Academic qualifications

Admission to the PhD programme is based on qualifications equivalent to a Danish two-year master's degree (120 ECTS). Degrees awarded by foreign universities must be assessed by either the PhD schools or the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science. Note that each PhD school has specific assessment rules regarding foreign degrees. Please contact the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science for an assessment of a foreign degree.

Admission

You can apply for admission as a PhD student through the specific PhD school at each faculty. The individual PhD schools have different procedures and deadlines for applications which can be found on their websites (links can be found on the right side of this page).

The emphasis in the applications is on the applicant's academic qualifications, the nature of research projects, how these can be included in the research plans of the academic environment concerned, and whether the requisite resources are available, including the supervisory capacity.

Before submitting the application, it is essential that you have the study funding in place.

Funding

There are different ways to finance the PhD programme. The funding must cover your own salary, tuition fee and other expenses in regard to your PhD project. Usually, one of the below options or a combination of them are used for funding:

  • Employment as a PhD fellow at the faculty
  • Employment at an institution, company or hospital in Denmark or abroad (if the PhD project is carried out primarily abroad, the PhD student must have a monthly amount corresponding to at least two monthly SU grant portions while staying in Denmark)
  • Funding from Innovation Fund Denmark (Industrial PhD)
  • Employment at a business-oriented institution (typically university colleges)
  • Scholarship from the home country.

UCPH stop for enrollment of self-paying PhD students

UCPH wants transparency in the funding of all research at UCPH and will not receive self-paying PhD students as of May 2025.
